Day 475 – Day 110

Day 475 – Day 110

“Can you shine the light? Shine the light on a shadow”
Josephina: Van Halen, Van Halen 3

Van Halen has always had the runaround with lead singers, much like Spinal Tap with their mysterious drummer. I have to say that all of their lead singers- I actually supported because they were all very talented. I missed the last tour with Dave which I regret, but it was Open Enrollment at work and there just was no time off…

This song is basically the story of Lolita… that of an older man falling in love with a much younger girl. I really don’t know if this was something that they wrote from personal experience, but I really also don’t want to picture that. While I don’t relate to the subject of the song, this song really stood out from the story of just buying the album.

I came to fall in love with this album from the moment that I bought it. I remember I was stranded in a town far away from home, and what made it worse was I didn’t really speak the language. I remember walking to a Target to buy this album. I remember walking to an Applebee’s for dinner, and then back to my hotel. I remember very patiently reading along with each song and listening to it over and over… it was truly making the best of a bad situation.

I remember sharing a lot of sentiment of this song with a fellow musician, and he scored me the score to this entire album at no charge because we were both such fans. It meant a lot to me, and we were supposed to perform this very song together at a recital, but we just never seemed to be able to perform together for one reason or another… here’s to you bro!

*** Artist Notes ***
Trying to shine a light on a shadow…

Lyrics:
Josephina, there's so much I want to know
I've known you for all of mine
But not all of yours
You're not a stranger
No, nothing could be further
I look back and I wonder
What you were like, long before

Josephina, if I asked you, would you tell me?
The fact from the fancy
And the dreams in between
Tell me a story
All about yours truly
Photographs from the past
Imagine the mystery

Did ya get your head lost in a daydream?
Cinderella, waiting for her charming
Did ya break a heart, like little girls often do?
Pigtails and painted toes
All dressed up in your mother's clothes
Can you shine the light?
Ah, can you shine the light?
Oh, please can you shine some light?
Yeah, can you shine the light?
Shine the light on a shadow

Josephina, would you lay down your defenses?
So i can make sense of
Those colors fading to grey
It's not that you're hiding
Something, I'd never imply
Yesteryear I may be gone
Can't say the same for today

Yeah, Josephina!

Ah, Josephina!

How else am I to know, that all the while
There was a mischievous look, behind that smile?
It's hard to tell, when innocence comes and goes
I'm sure that there were times, life could be unkind
Without a shoulder to cry on
Can you shine the light?
Ah, can you shine the light?
Yeah, please can you shine some light?
Yeah, can you shine the light?
Yeah, can you shine the light?
Shine the light on a shadow

The Graduate 365 days (Year 2) #32 12/02

The Graduate 365 days (Year 2) #32 12/02

Has this ever happened to you…
Someone mentions something to you in passing and it sticks in your mind for weeks?
That's what happened to me about a month ago when the movie The Graduate was mentioned.
I saw this movie once- about 20 years ago. I didn’t think much about it at the time- it was ok, but nothing special. Recently a friend mentioned that she saw it for the first time and liked it- except for the end. I mentioned this to another friend and she felt the same way. After arguing the finer points of modern culture and how it’s portrayed on for mass consumption on the big screen (and not really remembering it in detail over the years), I rented it, and watched it- twice!
For all of you lost souls that missed this cinematic gem, the story is a simple one:
(Warning! Spoiler Alert!)
Benjamin, a recent collage graduate, comes home. In his PTSD state, from collage life to real life, he finds himself seduced by a woman twice his age, Mrs. Robinson. Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson, who has all the warmth of a gin martini, have a few weeks of “hotel fun” until a new women enters the picture- Mrs. Robinson’s daughter Elaine. And here is where the fun begins. Benjamin and Elaine dig each other. Mrs. Robinson doesn’t want them to have anything to do with one another. Elaine finds out about her mothers “affair”, runs off to Berkley and meets “the man of her dreams“. Benjamin thinks he is Elaine’s “dream man” and crashes the wedding.
(This is the part those other two women in paragraph two hate.)
Benjamin and Elaine run out of the church, blocking the door so the others in the wedding party (Her parents, friends, her husband (they already said “I do”)) can’t follow. They board a city bus and spend the last 51 seconds of the movie (I timed it) sitting in the back of the bus as it pulls away. That’s it!
They thought the ending left them hanging.
I disagree.
If you look at it in the context of the time the movie was made, the ending represents wild freedom. Nothing is stopping these two kids. The establishment (their parents) are left behind and the future is theirs to experience.
My interpretation is a little different.
When that camera locks on those two kids in the back of that bus there faces show a distinct transformation- what I like to call the “WTF” moment. They were so carried away with the excitement of the moment that it isn’t until they have 51 seconds in that bus to realize they just made a huge mistake. It was super romantic but lets face the fact that they only went on one date, he is unemployed, and she just ran away from everyone she has ever known- so she can sit on a bus.
We have all had a few “WTF” moments, even me (not to this extent, of course) but most of the time they are reparable with a few kind words, flowers, jail time, whatever.
But it was that “WTF” moment on the bus that makes this film so great.
We can make mistakes.
And whether we realize it or not…
…the bus just keeps on driving.
